Introduction & Assessment
Utah is ringed by incredible flat water — Jordanelle Reservoir, Utah Lake, Deer Creek, Starvation Reservoir — and a kayak gets you out on all of it. Start by watching "Kayaking for Beginners" by PaddleTV on YouTube to see what basic strokes look like. Then visit REI.com's kayaking guides (free, no account needed) to learn the vocabulary: bow, stern, beam, hull, cockpit. Sit on a chair and practice holding a broom handle like a paddle — notice how your torso rotates, not just your arms. You're ready for the next step when you can name five kayak parts and describe the forward stroke in your own words.
Foundation Building
Before you're on the water, learn the four core strokes on dry land: forward, reverse, sweep, and draw. Watch the American Canoe Association's free videos at paddling.com — they're short, clear, and free. Practice the torso rotation motion on the floor: sit with your legs out, hold your broom paddle, and rotate through each stroke. Learn water safety rules too: always wear a PFD (personal flotation device), never paddle alone, and check the weather before you launch. You're ready for the next step when you can demonstrate all four strokes on land with correct torso rotation and recite three water safety rules.
Skill Development
Time to get wet. Rent a kayak at Jordanelle State Park or Utah Lake State Park — both rent sit-on-top kayaks by the hour, which are more forgiving for beginners. Your first goal: paddle in a straight line for 50 meters. Most beginners zigzag because they only use their arms. Lock in your torso rotation. Then practice turning: use a sweep stroke on the left to turn right, and vice versa. The app "PaddleLogger" lets you track your routes and distance for free. You're ready for the next step when you can paddle 100 meters in a straight line and make a full 180-degree turn using sweep strokes.
Practice & Refinement
Take on a longer paddle — aim for 30 to 45 minutes of continuous water time. Deer Creek Reservoir is beautiful and usually calm in the morning. Work on stopping quickly using a reverse stroke and navigating around floating obstacles. Try the draw stroke to pull your kayak sideways toward a dock or marker. Join r/kayaking and look at trip reports for Utah waters. You're ready for the next step when you can paddle for 30 minutes without significant fatigue, stop within one boat-length, and sidle up to a fixed point using a draw stroke.
Challenge Mode
Now you plan and execute your own route. Use Caltopo.com (free) to map a 2–3 mile water route on Jordanelle or Starvation Reservoir. Pack water, sunscreen, a dry bag for your phone, and a whistle. Learn wet exits and self-rescue basics by watching "How to Wet Exit a Kayak" on the PaddleTV YouTube channel — even if you're on flat water, knowing how to get back in matters. You're ready for the next step when you've completed your planned route independently and practiced a wet exit and re-entry at least twice in shallow water.
Mastery Demonstration
Lead a beginner. Bring a friend or family member out on the water and teach them the four strokes, safety rules, and how to enter and exit the kayak safely. You plan the route, you handle the safety check, you coach their technique. Afterward, write a short trip report — distances, conditions, what went well, what to improve — and post it to r/kayaking or the Utah Paddlers Facebook group. You're ready for the next step when you can safely lead a novice paddler through a 45-minute flat-water session and debrief them on at least three technique points.
