Awareness & Understanding
Learning a new language opens doors that are literally closed to people who only speak one. Before you pick a language and start drilling vocabulary, take time to get curious about why language learning matters and what it actually feels like. Watch the TED Talk "The Benefits of a Bilingual Brain" on YouTube. Browse r/languagelearning on Reddit and read posts from people learning different languages — notice what motivates them, what trips them up, and what they love. Think about your own life: what languages do the people around you in Salt Lake City speak? Utah has large Spanish, Tongan, Samoan, Portuguese, and Mandarin-speaking communities. You're ready for the next step when you can name two languages you'd consider learning and explain one personal reason why each one appeals to you.
Research & Investigation
Research the language you want to learn and figure out the best path to actually getting there. Visit the free resources at Duolingo (duolingo.com), Language Transfer (languagetransfer.org), and YouTube channels like "SpanishPod101" or "JapanesePod101" depending on your language. Read "How to Learn Any Language" summaries from polyglot blogs like Fluent in 3 Months (fluentin3months.com). Compare methods: apps, classes, conversation partners, immersion. Check Utah's UEEX (Utah Education and Telehealth Exchange) and your local school district — many Utah high schools offer language courses that count for college credit. Look up the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels so you understand what A1, B2, and C1 actually mean. You're ready for the next step when you have chosen your language and identified at least three free resources you will use.
Planning & Preparation
Build a realistic daily practice plan before motivation runs out. Research shows that 20–30 minutes of daily practice beats long weekend sessions every time. Create a weekly schedule: which app or resource you'll use each day, when you'll do it, and how you'll track your streak. Set up Anki (apps.ankiweb.net) — a free, research-backed flashcard app that uses spaced repetition to make vocabulary stick. Download the free HelloTalk or Tandem app to find native speakers who want to practice your language while you help them with English. Write your first 50 target vocabulary words on index cards or in Anki. Set a 90-day checkpoint goal — for example, "hold a 5-minute conversation about daily life." You're ready for the next step when you have a written weekly schedule, your first Anki deck built, and a conversation partner lined up.
Taking Action
Now practice every single day for at least four weeks without missing. Use your apps and Anki daily, and have at least two real conversations with your language partner each week on HelloTalk or Tandem. Watch a TV show or YouTube channel in your target language with subtitles — Netflix has strong options for Spanish, French, Korean, and Japanese. Read simple texts in your language using LingQ (lingq.com, free tier available) or children's books in your target language. Keep a simple vocabulary log — one new word or phrase per day, written down with its context. Visit a local community or restaurant where your target language is spoken; Salt Lake City has neighborhoods and businesses where many languages are used daily. You're ready for the next step when you have maintained daily practice for at least 28 days and can carry on a basic five-minute conversation.
Leadership & Expansion
Deepen your skills and share your journey with others. Start a language learning journal or Instagram series documenting your progress — even mistakes. Find a local language exchange meetup (search Meetup.com for your target language in Salt Lake City — there are active Spanish, French, and Mandarin groups). Tutor a beginner in your target language or help a non-English speaker in your community with English in exchange. Apply for a language immersion program — the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (nsliforyouth.org) offers fully-funded summer programs for less commonly taught languages. Challenge yourself with a CEFR-aligned test at an official testing center. You're ready for the next step when you have helped at least one other person with a language skill and have documented 60+ days of consistent practice.
Impact & Reflection
Take stock of how far you've come and set your next horizon. Record yourself having a conversation in your target language and compare it to a recording from your first week — the difference will be striking. Write a reflection answering: What worked best? What would you change? What level (A1–C2) do you estimate you've reached, and why? Compile your vocabulary logs, conversation notes, practice schedule, and reflection into a language portfolio. Share your story: post a "day 60 update" video online, present to your Spanish or world languages class, or apply for a bilingual internship or job where your new skill gives you a real edge. Look into the University of Utah's Language and Communication Studies programs for future pathways. You're ready for the next step when you have a complete portfolio, a recorded conversation sample, and a clear plan for continuing past this quest.
