Introduction & Assessment
Before you ever step on a board, understand what you're getting into. Skateboarding has a real learning curve, and bailing is part of the process — so knowing how to fall safely matters as much as learning tricks. Watch the YouTube channel "SkateboarderMag" or "Braille Skateboarding" for 20 minutes and just observe: watch foot positions, how skaters lean, how they recover from wobbles. Salt Lake City has solid skate spots — Liberty Park, the Rose Park Skate Park, and the Salt Lake Skate Park downtown are all free and well-maintained. Visit one this week just to watch. You're ready for the next step when you can identify the nose and tail of a board, name your stance (regular or goofy), and describe two ways skaters avoid bad falls.
Foundation Building
Put the board on flat grass first — it won't roll, so you can focus entirely on balance. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, weight centered over the bolts (not the nose or tail). Shift your weight slowly heel to toe and feel how the board responds. Then move to smooth concrete: practice the falling technique called a "roll out" — tuck your arms, turn your body, and let your shoulder absorb impact rather than your wrists. Watch "How to Fall Safely on a Skateboard" by Braille Skateboarding on YouTube. Spend 20 minutes just standing, rolling an inch or two, and practicing controlled falls. You're ready for the next step when you can stand on a stationary board for 30 seconds without gripping anything and demonstrate a safe roll-out fall.
Skill Development
Now you push. Place your front foot at a slight angle over the front bolts. Drop your back foot to the ground and give a smooth, confident push — not a frantic tap. Bring your back foot onto the board and ride out. Steer by leaning gently: lean toward your toes (toeside) to turn one direction, lean toward your heels (heelside) to turn the other. Practice pushing and gliding across a parking lot or smooth path 20 times per session. You're ready for the next step when you can push three times, ride smoothly for 10 feet, and make a controlled turn in each direction.
Practice & Refinement
Learn to stop without bailing. The foot brake: drag the sole of your back foot lightly on the ground — don't slam it. Practice starting, rolling 15 feet, and stopping cleanly. Then work on kick turns: put light pressure on the tail to lift the nose slightly, pivot on your back wheels, and redirect your direction. This is the foundation of all future maneuvering. Find a quiet section of the Rose Park or Liberty Park paths and run this drill 30 times over three sessions. Film yourself from the side so you can see if your weight is too far back. You're ready for the next step when you can push, cruise 20 feet, execute a kick turn, and stop — all in one smooth sequence.
Challenge Mode
Time for your first trick: the ollie. This is skateboarding's foundational move — a flat jump where the board comes with you. Pop the tail, drag your front foot forward along the board to level it out, then land with knees bent. It feels impossible at first. Break it into three parts: the pop (just smack the tail), the slide (just drag your foot), then combine. Watch "How to Ollie for Beginners" by Aaron Kyro on the Braille channel — he explains the physics clearly. Practice on carpet first so the board can't roll away. Aim for 10 practice attempts every session. You're ready for the next step when you can ollie on flat ground and land with both feet on the board, even if it's only an inch high.
Mastery Demonstration
Film a short skate clip — 60 to 90 seconds — showing your push, your kick turn, and your ollie back-to-back. Edit it on your phone with CapCut or iMovie and share it with a friend or post it to a skating community online. Write down your skate progress: what clicked, what still feels awkward, what you want to learn next. The SLC skate community is welcoming — show up to a local skate park, share your clip with someone there, and ask what trick they'd recommend next. You're ready for the next step when you can land a consistent ollie on flat ground and explain to someone else the three mechanics that make an ollie work.
