Introduction & Assessment
## Intro & Assessment Softball is one of those sports where just a few solid fundamentals separate a nervous beginner from a confident player. Before you dive into drills, figure out where you stand. Grab a glove and a ball and spend 20 minutes doing these three things: throw against a wall and catch your own rebound 20 times, take 10 swings with a bat (or just shadow swings if you do not have one), and practice the ready stance in the field — knees bent, weight forward, glove out. Utah has plenty of youth softball through SLC Recreation leagues — check slco.org for sign-up info and local fields. You are ready for the next step when you can name the three core skills of softball (hitting, fielding, and throwing) and honestly rate yourself in each one on a scale of 1 to 5.
Foundation Building
## Foundation Building Start with the two skills that affect every single play: throwing and catching. A correct throw uses your whole body — step toward your target with your opposite foot, rotate your hips, and follow through across your body. A correct catch uses soft hands — give a little as the ball hits the glove instead of stabbing at it. Practice with a partner or throw against a wall for 15 minutes every other day this week. Watch free fundamentals videos from USA Softball at usasoftball.com. Many SLC parks like Glendale Regional Park and Sugarhouse Park have open diamond space where you can practice for free. You are ready for the next step when you can throw accurately to a target 40 feet away 8 out of 10 times and catch 15 consecutive throws without dropping one.
Skill Development
## Skill Development Now add hitting to your practice routine. Hitting is all about timing and mechanics — keep your eye on the ball, hold the bat with a relaxed grip (tight grip kills bat speed), and swing level through the zone. If you have a tee, use it — hitting off a tee is how even college players train. No tee? Use a rolled-up sock hung from a string or ask a partner for slow underhand tosses. Aim for 50 swings per session. Also start practicing fielding ground balls: get low, field the ball in front of you with two hands, and come up ready to throw. USA Softball has free drill guides at usasoftball.com worth bookmarking. You are ready for the next step when you make solid contact 6 out of 10 swings off a tee and field 8 of 10 ground balls cleanly.
Practice & Refinement
## Practice & Refinement Put the individual skills together in game situations. Find a pickup game or join a recreational league through SLC Recreation — playing with others is the fastest way to improve. Focus on the mental side this week: Where do you throw if the ball is hit to you? Who backs up which base? Before each at-bat, think about where you want to hit the ball. USA Softball and many coaches call this "playing the game in your head before it happens." Watch two innings of any softball game — in person at a SLC high school game or on YouTube — and call every play out loud before it happens to sharpen your game awareness. You are ready for the next step when you can play a full inning in a real or simulated game and make the correct throwing decision on every ball that comes to you.
Challenge Mode
## Challenge Mode Push your skills to their limit this week. For hitting, set up a challenge: 10 swings off a tee, trying to drive the ball to a specific spot (left side, right side, straight ahead). Track your success rate. For fielding, have someone hit or roll balls to your left and right — the balls that are not right at you are the ones that separate good fielders from great ones. For throwing, try long toss: back up 10 feet at a time until you find your max accurate range. Look into free USA Softball coaching clinics or camps sometimes offered through SLC parks and rec in spring and summer. You are ready for the next step when you can consistently hit to a target zone, field balls hit 5 feet to either side, and throw accurately from 60 feet.
Mastery Demonstration
## Mastery Demonstration The best way to prove you have leveled up is to bring someone else along. Run a 45-minute softball basics clinic for two or more beginners. Walk them through the correct throwing motion, a two-handed catch, and three fundamentals of hitting. Let them take swings while you coach their stance and swing path. Then play a short scrimmage where you explain positioning out loud as it happens. Afterward, write up a one-page "Softball Basics" tip sheet they can keep. Teaching forces you to understand the game at a deeper level — and your teammates will thank you. You are ready for the next step when you have coached at least two beginners through all three core skills and each one shows clear improvement by the end of the session.
